3.00 pm: visit to Lille with a Road Book

This will be the chance to explore Lille’s charming city centre, taking in the Grand Place, the Town Hall and its belfry, the Palais Rihour and the Vieille Bourse stock exchange, to name just a few of its attractions. Beautifully restored, Lille old town impresses with its flamboyant architecture. Its façades alternate between pastel shades and bold colours, which emphasise the exuberant and lavish décor.

5.15 pm: departure from Lille in a private bus

Lille is located in a region packed with history. Nicknamed the “Capital of Flanders”, the city closely neighbours Belgium. A former garrison town, Lille’s history is one of great upheaval: it was France’s most besieged city between the Middle Ages and the French Revolution! Initially a merchant town, Lille later became a manufacturing hub, chiefly for the textile industry. It is also located right in the centre of the Nord region’s mining heartland. Coal mining has had a significant impact on the area’s economy, social fabric, landscape and culture. During the bus journey, the history of Lille and its surrounding area will be recounted by a guide.

5.45 pm: arrival at the Louvre-Lens

The Louvre-Lens is a satellite museum of the Louvre in Paris. It takes visitors on a unique journey through the Louvre’s collections by exhibiting a selection of works from every department of its parent museum. Inaugurated in December 2012, the Louvre-Lens boasts 7,000m² of exhibition space and was designed by SANAA, a Japanese firm of architects headed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryūe Nishizawa. During our visit, Louvre-Lens Museum will be closed to the public.

6.00 pm: start of two guided visits: The Galerie du Temps + Charles Le Brun

You will visit both galleries of the Louvre-Lens, accompanied by an English-speaking guide. In the Galerie du Temps, collections dating from 3,500 B.C. to 1,850 A.D. will be presented from a broad and cross-disciplinary perspective. In the temporary gallery you will find an exhibition on Charles Le Brun, the official painter of Louis XIV and Versailles.
